How much and how often should my baby eat?

I get quite a few questions asking ‘how much’ and ‘how often’ should my baby eat.. it’s a bit of a tricky question to answer, as like adults, babies will have different needs! My advice would be always boob (or formula) before food atleast until baby starts weaning (or 12 months of age).

When first starting foods at 6 months I would recommend just one meal a day, preferably mid morning. After a few weeks you could add an evening meal. At 8-9 months your baby might move on to 2-3 meals (or 2 meals + snack) a day, then 10-12 months will most likely want 3 meals + snacks (but if not it’s fine - we are all individuals so just listen and tune into your babies needs).

In regards to how much your baby should eat is going to differ. If baby led weaning this is easy as baby will finish eating when he or she is full, of still interested and eating maybe give more! If spoon feeding it’s important to look for signs of fullness - baby being disinterested or turning away. Remember even though you have lovingly prepared them a meal and may want them to finish it all, it’s important to respect that when baby is finished not to push it. Our babies are born with the ability to regulate how much food they need, they eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. If we respect this, then it should translate into toddler years and beyond ✨
